Climate

The climate of this region is influenced by four main factors: the local geography, the sea, the Andes Mountain Range and the massive Southern Ice Field. These interaction of these factors produce the rains, snowfalls and west-northwest gales.
This region is characterized by its winds. The winds become more intense during the spring and the summer seasons when they blows at an average speed of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour, and occasionally reach gusting speeds of 150 kilometres per hour. Winter is known for its relative tranquility when the fierce summer winds decrease.

Temperature

The annual average temperature in Puerto Natales is 6.5°C although temperatures of 10°C can be registered at any month of the year. In summer there are a few exceptionally warm days that reach temperatures of 25°C to 30°C. However, the following day could be close to 0°C. Patagonia is known for having 4 seasons in one day.

Recomendations

If you plan to visit Torres del Paine National Park, we recommend making hotel or mountain hut reservations well in advance. Especially in the high season, the facilities in the park have little vacancy.

Proper Clothing

Since there are strong winds, rain and snow on some days in the area, it is very important to have the proper clothing for these occasions.


Upper Body

- Quick-drying T-shirt: The advantage of special fibers is that they dry very quickly and, hence, the body does not chill.
- Polartech or fleece jacket: Essential, it keeps you warm and protects you from the wind.
- Water repellent jacket: Gore-Tex protects from the rain, while at the same time allowing perspiration to evaporate, so that the body does not chill.
- Polartech gloves: Ideally, take two pairs.

Legs

- Leggings or stockings of quick drying fiber
- Water repellent trousers (Gore-Tex).
- Shorts for when it is hot
- Polartech trousers for campsites

Head

- Woolen or polartech cap (two)
- Polartech neck warmer
- Sunglasses with UV protection
- At least factor 45 Sunblock
- Lipsalve

Feet

- Polartech or polypropylene socks.
- Trekking shoes, preferably calf length to avoid sprains. Try them out at least a week beforehand to ensure that they are comfortable.
- Comfortable shoes for resting: For base camps and to rest your feet.
- Gaiters (optional): To cover the bottom of the trousers and boots and prevent mud, water or snow from penetrating to your socks and wetting your feet.

For Sleeping

- Sleeping bag: The only thing that works without any problems in Patagonia is synthetic fiber. Sleeping bags from 0° to 20° are enough. . Sleeping mat. Portable, lightweight, that isolates the cold and wet from the ground. These can be leased in Puerto Natales or from the tourist
